Dashboard for Type 2 Diabetes Management
There are an increasing number of services designed to help type 2 diabetic patients to track and manage their health. These tools summarize and display such complex information as blood glucose readings, goal progress, food consumption, activity level and medications in a way that is easy to understand in order to adapt patient behavior and maximize glycemic control. The aim of this project is to develop a tool for Medtronic patients to utilize the information listed above as well as additional information from continuous glucose monitors, accelerometers, supply order history, Medtronic help-line records and physician recommendations. The project combines data analysis, data visualization, computer science and business intelligence.
Research:
- Study available diabetes tools (website, mobile apps, services, etc.) to understand the current status of the technology.
- Perform research on the disease-associated physiology as well as clinical recommendations for type 2 diabetes management. Use this information to consider innovative displays, recommendations and analytics not currently available.
- Use the results of this research to justify and develop the tool on a single platform (either a website or a mobile app) and explain which is best for the patient and the company and why.
Implementation:
- Design proof-of-concept dashboard for each of the following pages
- One overview page including:
i.current glucose status (current blood glucose, % time in euglycemia, hypoglycemia excursion frequency) with link to historical glucose values
ii.current meal intake with link to historical meal time glucose values
iii.current activity level with link to historical exercise glucose values
iv.current medication regimen with link to historical prescriptions and dosages
v.current progress toward goals with link to goal page (glucose management goals, exercise goals, diet goals, etc)
vi.links to Medtronic specific services
- Each of the linked pages described above
i.historical glucose data broken down by mealtime, activity and overall
ii.medication, diet and exercise history as well as goals
iii.Medtronic specific services including sales, trainings and help-line records
iv.physician support and other support groups
- Choose one page involving glucose data to develop and implement
Extra:
- While the content of each page are outlined above, utilization of the lessons learned during the research phase is highly desired. We especially encourage the use of novel analytical techniques, visualizations or additional tools that are developed by the team.
- For those interested in more complex analytical techniques, use machine-learning to develop predictive models for patient-specific glucose values based upon historical glucose values, accelerometer data, food intake and medication type to display in the dashboard.
- Because of the large scope of the project, we have asked for the development of only one single page. Time permitting, feel free to develop as many of the pages as the team deems appropriate, but note that in terms of implementation and development we value quality over quantity.
